RESOURCES AND LINKS FOR
BIRDING IN NORTHWEST OHIO

These birding pages from BSBO will help you decide where and when to go birding in this region.  Here are some other resources to help you get the most from the experience.

Maps:  Although we provide directions and some local maps, you should have a good road map to navigate around the area.  Many Ohio birders favor the DeLorme state atlases, which are superb for highways and back roads.

Field Guides:  Unless you’re already a seasoned expert, you need a compact, portable guide to field identification.  One of our favorites is the Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America (available at the BSBO nature shop).

Local book:  Highly recommended is Birds of the Toledo Area by Matt Anderson, Eric Durbin, Tom Kemp, Steve Lauer, and Elliot Tramer, a special publication (2002) of the Ohio Biological Survey and the Toledo Naturalists’ Association.  This book gives detailed accounts of seasonal occurrence, abundance, and habitat for every species known to have occurred in this area.  Available at the BSBO shop.

Websites

RareBird (NW Ohio):  This forum is informal and fun, and very informative, with lots of posts about the latest sightings in the general Toledo area.  Sponsored by our friends at the Toledo Naturalists’ Association.  To view it, click here:
www.rarebird.org/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=1

Ohio Ornithological Society:  This organization’s website includes many resources for birders, including directions to many birding spots statewide.  To connect, click here: www.ohiobirds.org

Kirtland Bird Club:  This famous organization in the Cleveland area provides information on birding the Lake Erie shore just to the east of our Crane Creek - Magee region.  Their website includes birding advice by month and a winter lakefront birding trail.  Click here: www.kirtlandbirdclub.org

Organizations

Friends of Magee Marsh:  This non-profit organization provides valuable support to the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and the Sportsmen’s Migratory Bird Center, and holds many events of interest to birders and the public.  For more information, click here: www.friendsofmageemarsh.org

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Association:  A non-profit organization that promotes better understanding of the western Lake Erie marsh region, and that aids the work of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.  For more information, click here: www.onwra.com

Toledo Naturalists’ Association:  Expert birders, and experts on every other branch of natural history, belong to this long-established and active organization.  Their website includes details on a number of birding sites to the west and north of the ones covered by BSBO.  To connect, click here: www.toledonaturalist.org
