These
birding pages from BSBO will help you decide where and
when to go birding in this region. Here are some other
resources to help you get the most from the experience.
Maps:
Although we provide directions and some local maps, you
should have a good road map to navigate around the
area. Many Ohio birders favor the DeLorme state
atlases, which are superb for highways and back roads.
Field
Guides:
Unless you’re already a seasoned expert, you need a
compact, portable guide to field identification. One of
our favorites is the Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of
North America (available at the BSBO nature shop).
Local
book:
Highly recommended is Birds of the Toledo Area by
Matt Anderson, Eric Durbin, Tom Kemp, Steve Lauer, and
Elliot Tramer, a special publication (2002) of the Ohio
Biological Survey and the Toledo Naturalists’
Association. This book gives detailed accounts of
seasonal occurrence, abundance, and habitat for every
species known to have occurred in this area. Available
at the BSBO shop.
