ATTENTION BIRDERS:
AN IMPORTANT SHOREBIRD RESEARCH PROJECT NEEDS YOUR HELP
Researchers
are currently studying the ecology of shorebird
migration in the southwest Lake Erie Marsh Region: an
area that provides critical stopover habitat for
migrating shorebirds. The research being conducted will
collect valuable information to improve shorebird
habitat conservation plans for the region. Part of the
project involves color-marking shorebirds in order to
more effectively track their movements through the marsh
region. Your reports are crucial to the success of the
project. Learn more about how birders can help conduct
this valuable research by reporting color-marked
shorebirds they see. Learn more

North Canton man
designates 2012 as his
Big Year
And his birding
adventures will raise funds
for Black Swamp Bird Observatory!

Black Swamp
Bird Observatory (BSBO) is honored to be named the
recipient of funds to be raised by North Canton, Ohio
resident, Pat Paternostro, during his 2012 Big Year!
Pat's "Big Year" fundraising project goal is to see at
least 400 species, add 20 new birds to his life list, and
more importantly, spend some quality birding time with
his 11 year-old son.
Follow along on Pat’s birding adventures through his Big
Year blog
HERE.
Inspired by his father, Pat has been birding since he
was 10 years old. He has a Forestry Management degree
from Penn State College, is a certified Arborist, and is
currently employed in
Akron
as an operations manager at ACRT, Inc., a utility
vegetation management consulting firm whose objective is
to help power companies provide safe and reliable
electric service. Being a native of
Pennsylvania, his favorite birding locale is
Hawk Mountain.
His current life list boasts 460 birds, and his most
memorable encounter was a Great Grey Owl at Yellowstone
National Park.
He considered doing a Big Year for several years, and
since he works for an environmental company, his
co-workers suggested that he track his progress in his
company's newsletter. With that in mind, Pat felt he
could make his endeavors even more rewarding by
including a chance to give back. He asked my co-workers
to consider donating either a lump sum or a (by species)
sum to a bird-related organization. Since he frequently
birds Magee Marsh (like most Ohio birders), he's familiar
with the bird conservation work that the BSBO does in
the area, and he chose to include us as beneficiaries of
the proceeds from his Big Year!
